Frequently asked questions
No formal clinical diagnosis is required at the time of initial inquiry. If you're a Veteran or First Responder living with service-related challenges—such as PTSD, anxiety, mobility issues, or chronic pain—you may be eligible. During the application process, you’ll be asked to provide supporting documentation related to your service and condition.
We work hard to reduce costs for our recipients through donor support and efficient training models. While applicants are responsible for personal travel and post-placement care, the cost of the dog, training, and veterinary care prior to placement is covered through the program.
Wait times vary depending on your needs, dog availability, and training cycles. Once you apply and complete the interview, we’ll give you an estimated timeline. We’ll do our best to keep you informed throughout the process, and your assigned Advocate will help you navigate the timeline.
All Warrior Paws dogs are American Kennel Club (AKC) registered American Labrador Retrievers—black, chocolate, or yellow. They are purpose-bred through our trusted partners and professionally trained using a trauma-informed model that prioritizes real-life functionality. These dogs are selected for their temperament, health, and adaptability to ensure they are well-suited for service work with Veterans and First Responders.
No. All Warrior Paws dogs come from our trusted partners and are specifically selected for temperament, health, and suitability for service work. While we take your lifestyle and needs into account during matching, we do not offer breed or size selection. Our priority is creating the strongest possible partnership—not meeting breed preferences.
Warrior Paws dogs are service dogs, trained to perform specific, practical tasks that support both physical and psychological needs. This goes beyond emotional comfort—your dog will be trained to help in tangible ways based on your unique challenges.
No. Warrior Paws only places service dogs that have been specifically selected, raised, and trained through our program. We do not train outside or existing pets for service work.
